To process shea kernels, we need a combination of a mechanical pressing unit (oil press) and a solvent extraction (SEP) plant. The following are the steps involved in a shea butter extraction plant:

The shea fruit kernels are separated and cleaned to remove impurities such as dust, minerals, and plant debris. This cleaning process helps reduce equipment friction, ensures safe operation, minimizes butter loss, extends the lifespan of wear-resistant parts, increases productivity, and improves the quality of the butter and meal.
We offer a multi-layer vibrating seed cleaner, equipped with a suction system and a dust collection box. It is available in various sizes and capacities to meet our customers’ requirements.

The cleaned chia kernels undergo a conditioning process inside a multi-layered vertical cooking kettle. The kettle uses steam to indirectly heat the chia kernels. It is specifically designed to achieve a minimum outlet temperature of 110°C and a minimum holding time of 60 minutes.
The main purpose of seed cooking/preparation is to:
adjust the moisture content in the meal to the optimal level;
facilitate the breakdown of cell walls;
reduce the viscosity of the oil;
and coagulate the protein in the meal to facilitate the separation of oil from protein.

In the mechanical pressing process, the chia kernels are compressed using a series of screw presses/expellers.
This process relies on mechanical pressing without the use of any chemicals, leaving approximately 15–18% of the butter remaining in the residue (the resulting cake). This residue is then cooled in a dedicated cooler before being sent to a solvent extraction unit to extract further shea butter.

A filter press is a device used to separate solids from crude shea oil.
In recent years, solvent extraction has developed rapidly. Based on the principle of solvent extraction, it can significantly increase butter yield. The buttercake, which contains approximately 15% to 18% butter, is then processed using solvent extraction to reduce the residual oil content to less than 1.5%.
This oil-reduced meal, containing less than 1.5% residual butter, is used as fuel for boilers to generate steam. This is another added advantage of GOYUM’s shea butter extraction plant.
The overall butter yield from combining the pre-pressing method and solvent extraction is much higher compared to the mechanical extraction method.
To improve butter production, higher pressures and higher steam cooking temperatures are required. GOYUM mills are designed using advanced technologies that make them ideally suited for processing shea kernels.

A filter press is a device used to separate solids from crude shea oil.
The extracted shea butter contains approximately 5–10% suspended solids (impurities). This mixture is sent to a vibrating separator/sieve tank for initial separation of these impurities. The separated impurities are then returned to the press. Subsequently, the initially purified shea butter undergoes a final filtration process using a filter press or vertical pressure filters (VPLF).

The filtered raw shea butter is then subjected to a vacuum drying unit to reduce the moisture content to the permissible limit, which helps to increase the shelf life of the raw shea butter.
Vacuum-dried shea butter is suitable for export to the United States, Canada, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, and others.
