Before the oil is extracted, the safflower seeds are passed through a double-deck vibratory seed cleaner to remove dust, stones, minerals, straw, and other foreign impurities.

Proper seed cleaning not only protects downstream equipment such as oil presses, but also enhances oil productivity and quality by removing contaminants that may hinder the extraction process.

Once the safflower seeds have been cleaned, they are transferred to the boiler/cooker in the oil press/oil extraction machine. In the boiler/cooker, the seeds are conditioned using steam, raising the temperature to approximately 70–80°C. This conditioning process softens the seed structure, reduces the viscosity of the oil, and improves oil extraction efficiency.

Safflower seeds typically contain about 35–40% oil. To maximize oil yield, a two-stage pressing system is often used in medium to large safflower oil mills.

In the first pressing, approximately 20–25% of the oil is extracted. The resulting oil cake, which still contains about 18–20% residual oil, is then fed into the second pressing process. This secondary pressing yields an additional 10–13% oil, leaving a final oil cake with 8–10% residual oil.

The final oil cake is used as animal feed because it contains a high percentage of protein and fiber.

The crude oil produced from the piston contains suspended solids known as impurities. To remove these coarse impurities, the oil is first passed through a vibratory separator or screening tank. This initial step helps reduce the load on the filtration system and improves performance.

After clarification, the initially purified oil is passed through an oil filter press, which removes fine particles and ensures the oil is clear and free of impurities. The filtered oil is then suitable for storage or further refining.
