Industry Overview of Edible Vegetable Oil
Oilseeds are one of the most valuable agricultural crops in world trade. According to research and markets, the global vegetable oil market grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 4% between 2011 and 2018, with consumption volume reaching nearly 200 million tonnes last year. It includes non-food market segments such as industrial, cosmetics and biofuels.
According to BFAP, South Africa’s total vegetable oil demand has increased by an average of 3% per year during the last ten years; In 2017 41% of it was produced locally.
Oil is derived from oilseeds and nuts including soybean, sunflower, canola, cotton and peanuts. Soya beans are the source of most of the world’s seed oil (53%), followed by rapeseed oil (part of which as canola) (15%), cotton oil (10%) and peanut oil (9%).
Soy Bean Oil
Soybean oil is the most globally produced vegetable oil. Soybean oil is a by-product of the animal feed industry, which uses large amounts of soybean meal. The US is the largest producer after Brazil, Argentina and China. These countries produce about 90% of the global soybean crop. Excludes Asia, China and Africa, accounting for only 5% of production. According to IndexBox, in 2017, around 62 million tonnes of soybean oil were consumed worldwide.
Sunflower Oil
According to Statista, consumption of sunflower seed oil was 17,6 million tonnes worldwide in 2017/18. Global vegetable oil production was around 198 million tonnes in 2016/17. FAOSTAT indicates that Ukraine and Russia are world leaders in sunflower seed production. The index gives the following figures for the production of major countries in Mundi 2018: Ukraine at 6,2 million tons, Russia at 4,7 million tons, EU at 3,7 million tons, Argentina at 1,4 million tons, Turkey at 935 000 Ton and China at 717 000 tons. South Africa produces 285 000 million tons of sunflower seed oil, the most consumed vegetable oil in the country.
Mustard Oil
Canola is a variety of rapeseed and a member of the mustard family, which is Brassicaceae. The major global producers are China, Canada and India. According to the index Mundi, China produced 27,5% (7 million tonnes) of world production in 2018. China is followed by Canada (4,1 million tonnes), India (2,1 million tonnes) and Japan (just 1 million tonnes). The European Union also produces a large quantity (9,6 million tonnes).
Cottonseed Oil
Cottonseed is a by-product of cotton ginning, which weighs 16 to 17% of its oil. The major producers are China, India, Brazil, Pakistan and America. The index gives the following tonnage for cotton oil production in Mundi 2018: China produces just over 1,3 million tons, India 1,3 million tons, Brazil 565 000 tons, Pakistan 468 000 tons and US 268 million tons.
Peanut Oil
Around 60% of the peanuts produced in the world are used for oil production. Peanut oil, with a high smoking point and a neutral flavour, is often used for frying. According to Index Mundi, China was the major producer of 2,78 million tonnes of groundnut oil in 2018. India came in second place after 990 000 tonnes, Myanmar at 270,000 tonnes, Nigeria at 265 000 tonnes and Sudan at 220 000 tonnes.
